Hints & Tips

Show all the recognized text at once
Press and hold the space bar.

Multi-Page PDFs
If you are given the overhead notes of a class before the class, print them as a PDF file. You can then drag and drop the PDF file of the notes onto your inkBook document window. Each page of the PDF will be added on successive pages of your inkBook. Now you can take notes on top of the lecture slides!

Disappearing Ink
Sometimes, after inking, the ink disappears. This is because Inkwell recognized the ink as a gesture and not as text. While gestures can be very useful, they can sometimes get in the way, particularly when drawing sketches. You can prevent Inkwell from picking up your ink as a gesture by either turning gestures off in inkBook's preferences or, by making sure that you pick up the pen and draw another line before Inkwell tries to recognize your ink.

Gestures
Inkwell has a number of pre-defined gestures that inkBook takes advantage of. These gestures can make using inkBook faster and easier. Open the Ink preference pane and click on the "Gestures" tab to view how to draw Gestures.

inkBook supports the following gestures:

  • Undo
  • Cut
  • Copy
  • Paste
  • Clear (Delete the objects under the gesture)
  • Join
  • Horizontal Space (inkBook treats this as insert page)
  • Delete (Delete the objects under the gesture)
  • Select All

Improving Recognition Accuracy
Write in print! In MacOS X 10.4, InkWell does not support cursive. inkBook will support script as soon as InkWell does. If you require script, ask Apple to add cursive recognition to InkWell.

Write horizontally! There are horizontal lines on the paper. Use them. InkWell does not do well with text that is at an angle, nor does it like vertical text.

Give InkWell a moment to recognize you ink. After a brief pause, InkWell attempts to recognize all of the text you recently wrote. While inkWell is recognizing your text, do not start inking again, and do not click outside of the inking area either. After InkWell has recognized your text, inkBook cleans up the initial rough version of your ink. When you notice your ink change slightly, InkWell has completed recognizing your recent ink and you can start inking again.

Improve Tablet Feel
Cut a sheet of paper to the size of the active area of the tablet. Tape it to the tablet. Now it will feel more like taking notes on real paper.

F. A. Q.

Q. I am running Leopard but Ink does not stay on, and all I get in inkBook is a selection. How do I get inkBook to work in Leopard?
A. First, do the following to make sure that this is indeed the exact problem you are having.

  • Open the Ink System Preference pane.
  • Set "Handwriting recognition" to ON.
  • Quit System Preferences.
  • Open the Ink System Preference pane.
  • If "Handwriting recognition" is now OFF, then follow instruction bellow.
This is a known bug in Leopard, and inkBook will not work without Ink turned ON. Please follow the instructions in Apple Technote: 307372.

Q. Does inkBook work on the new Intel Macs?
A. Yes! inkBook 1.2.0 and higher is a Universal application. It runs nativley on PPC and Intel Macs.

Q. Does inkBook recognize Japanese (Chinese, Korean, Arabic, insert script here)?
A. inkBook does not do any of the handwriting recognition itself. It relies on Apple's InkWell handwriting recognition engine. In 10.4.x, Apple's InkWell can only recognize printed Roman characters. There is an option in the Ink system preferences to have ink recognize "European" charcters (ie accent marks). As soon as Apple's InkWell handwriting recognition supports other scripts, inkBook will automatically gain support for those scripts as well. Please let Apple know what scripts you need InkWell to support.

Q. When is Apple going to build a "Tablet Mac"? Wouldn't that be cool?
A. I have no idea about when Apple might integrate a tablet and a laptop.

In the meantime, checkout the ModBook from Axiotron. I have mine on order!

Q. I use my mouse but all I get is a selection. Why can't I ink?
A. You must use your tablet or other ink-aware input device to draw ink.

Q. I am using the pen with my tablet and I still don't get any ink!
A. Ink must be turned on in your System Preferences. Open System Preferences and click on Ink (Hardware section). Set "Handwriting recognition" to "On". Note: you do not have to have check "Allow me to write anywhere." Ink Preferences

Q. I wrote some ink, but now all I can do is select.
A. (Fixed in inkBook version 1.3.1) Inking is now forced to be recognized when you mouse outside of the document window. This should prevent InkWell from getting into this state.
